a reason | by Drew

Just home from a long weekend away at school and I am dying to just sit with my little guy and read him a story. He doesn't want a story. "No!" he says. The boy thinks only in terms of pirates, swords, and turning any given object into a pretend gun. So, maybe selfishly, I wanted to just read to him. I have nothing against pirates; I actually selected a pirate story to read him. I simply wanted to enrich his life with something other than a purple plastic octopus with removable tentacles. And so the conversation began:

"Drew, why can't I read you a story?"

"Because!"

"Because?"

"Because, it's a reason, which are just like raisins, which are just like en ems (m&m's), but we don't have any."

Only from the mind of a three year old could that logic come.
